» 68TH "TURKEY NIGHT" TAKES SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY |
|
11-23-2008 - by Don Holbrook
|
The 68th running of one of America's most revered short-track auto races unfolds Thursday night at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. The annual "Turkey Night Midget Grand Prix" brings together the best of America's Midget racers for the final event in the 2008 USAC National and Western championships.
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. and Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. enter the race separated by only 17 points. Each has an agenda, Hines to secure the elusive USAC "Triple Crown" and Whitt to cap a fantastic sophomore season with USAC.
Hines already owns USAC Silver Crown and National Sprint titles and the Midget crown would stand him alongside Tony Stewart, J.J. Yeley, Pancho Carter, Dave Darland and Jerry Coons Jr. as the only drivers in USAC history to win all three National championships in a career.
Whitt, who became the youngest USAC Sprint feature winner ever this summer, only to be eclipsed by Chad Boat the... [Read More]

» Nemechek, Furniture Row Agree To Contract Buyout |
|
11-21-2008 - by News Guy
|
Team's plans to scale back was big factor in the split
By Team Release
November 21, 2008
Denver, Colorado -- On the heels of Furniture Row Racing announcing plans for a limited 2009 Sprint Cup Series schedule, the team announced Friday a contract buyout of its driver Joe Nemechek.
"Just like the reduced schedule announcement, this buyout of Joe's contract has nothing to do with his on-track performance," said team president Joe Garone. "But our contract with Joe for 2009 was for a full schedule and we're not able to fulfill that part of the deal."
In only its third year as a Sprint Cup Series team, Furniture Row Racing is coming off its best year, qualifying for 32 out of 36 races and earning the team's first pole position at Talladega Superspeedway in the... [Read More]

» Firestone Indy Lights Modify Engine For 2009 |
|
11-19-2008 - by Joe Starr
|
Firestone Indy Lights engines will undergo a modification for 2009. The 90-degree crankshaft used in the engines since the series' inception in 2002 has been changed to a 180-degree crankshaft.
"We primarily made the change to make the car sound more like they have single-seater racing engines," said Roger Bailey, executive director of Firestone Indy Lights. "The change will help the car's performance as well. It doesn't really change the horsepower, but the drivers will see an improvement in the power-band in the mid-range. And that will help our cars get off the corner better."
"From the outward appearance, there won't be any changes to the motor," said Speedway Engine Development’s Jeff Gordon, Firestone Indy Lights program manager. "The noticeable difference is the sound the engine makes is more similar to the IndyCar Series engine.
"Our goal is to make the engines the same so they are not a... [Read More]

» Chuck Amati Remembered as One of the Original Outlaws |
|
11-19-2008 - by Don Holbrook
|
Concord, NC— November 19, 2008—Chuck Amati was an “Outlaw” long before the inaugural 1978 World of Outlaws season. For over 40 years he raced from coast-to-coast chasing wins, and when he took his helmet off for the final time in 2002, he had accumulated hundreds of them in his career in a numbers of different types of race cars.
The World of Outlaws and the entire racing community mourn the loss of the Hall of Fame driver, who passed away on Tuesday, November 18 at the age of 68 in his home state of Illinois, after suffering a massive heart attack while driving.
Amati will always be remember as “The One Armed Bandit,” a nickname he earned on a night, when he sustained an injury to his right arm and devised a harness to hold the arm in place in his lap, driving using his left arm. The arm would eventually heal, though the nickname stuck with him for the rest of his career and contributed to him being one of the most colorful drivers to... [Read More]

INDYCAR SERIES PARTNERS WITH APEX-BRASIL AS OFFICIAL ETHANOL SUPPLIER
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 – In an effort to communicate the many options in which ethanol can be produced and to enhance its position as a global commodity, the IndyCar Series -- which has been at the forefront of the greening of racing and embraced renewable fuels since 2006 -- has announced a partnership with APEX-Brasil making the trade promotion agency the official ethanol supplier to the IndyCar Series beginning with the 2009 season.
The multi-year deal names APEX-Brasil an official partner of the Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500, which includes cooperation from UNICA (the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) to identify those interested in supplying ethanol to the series. Initially, UNICA will look to partner with a U.S.-based ethanol company to supply the IndyCar Series with corn-based ethanol.
One of the primary... [Read More]

Edwards Wins Race, Johnson Takes Third Straight Title
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI -- Jimmie Johnson has accomplished racing's version of the hat trick.... three championships in a row.
He did it with a 15th -place finish in southern Florida's grand finale for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. Carl Edwards won the battle, so to speak, but Johnson won the war.
On a day when he only needed a 36th-place finish to clinch his third title in a row, Johnson brought his Lowe's Chevrolet into the thick of the battle, steadily clicking off position after position in the 267-lap race.
Johnson's championship run was the first three-peat in NASCAR since Cale Yarborough did it 30 years ago.
