      COUPE  CLATTER

         MID - SEASON  2010

      COLORADO AUTOMOBILE RACING CLUB

The 2010 CARC is at the halfway point with Frank Denning III in the lead for the points championship. The season has been marked by rain, short car counts, first-time winners and a season several race teams would like to “do-over”.

The season opened with 2 of 3 hot-lap sessions at Colorado National Speedway (CNS) cancelled due to rain. Rain continued as the first TWO races at CNS were cancelled. So, the season opened at I-25 Speedway in Pueblo on May 15th. 10 cars were on hand for this “double points” race (the #71 of Jim Bredeson broke a motor in Wednesday practice and could not compete). Gary Land set fast time at 12.59, followed by Frank Denning III and J.D. Gresham( who was suffering from pneumonia) Heats went to Joe St. Peter and Gary Land. Cory Gordon won the Trophy Dash. Joe St. Peter started on the front row of the main and after a hard fought battle with Scott Rhoades came home victorious. The rains came cancelling post-race tech. Frank Denning III and Gary Land are tied for the points lead. J.D. Gresham is the rookie leader.  Chet Graham won the Lucky Dog Award.

22 May is our opening night at CNS. 14 coupes are in attendance including Joe James Jr. making his return to CARC racing. The opening heat was marked by a grinding crash that ended J.D. Gresham’s season. His jet black #75 owned by Theron/Glenda Bredeson made hard contact with the turn 4 wall ripping both front wheels from the car. J.D. was uninjured but asked to be relieved of his driving duties for personal reasons. The car is sidelined until July when it returns with Matt “The Pebble” at the wheel. Frank Denning III and Gary Land won heats while CARC Rookie Cris Muhler wins his first Mod Coupe main event. Cris is a CARC rookie but a veteran of Late models, Pro Trucks, and Super Mods. J.D. Gresham continued his rookie lead and ironically the Lucky Dog Award. Frank “3D” Denning III grabbed a slim one point lead in the championship race.

Memorial Day  saw the CARC travel north to Cheyenne for a rare Sunday race. Scott Rhoades was fastest of the 11 coupes at a 12.701. Joe St.Peter won the trophy dash. Cory Gordon and Gary Land the heats. Scott Rhoades won the main event and dedicated it to his”Gramps” Warren Rhoades who celebrated his “final banquet”  earlier in May. Scott was awarded the traveling “Sam Gallo Memorial Trophy” by three members of the Gallo family. Carl Vair was the Lucky Dog and Gary Land took the points lead. Bryan Gossel took the rookie lead. Bryan drives for Lakeside veteran Russ Cummings. His car is powered by a GM “crate” motor, the only one in CARC competition.

June 5 and we’re back at CNS with 10 coupes participating. Rich Bubak and 3D win the heats. Jaime Bubak’s car was on-hand but Jaime was playing in a softball tournament and never got to the track. When all was said and done Joe James Jr. in the beautiful #54 returned to the CARC winner’s circle after many years in late models. Chet Graham was the lucky Dog. Gary Land and Bryan Gossel continue their respective leads.

The 2010 CARC Banquet is 30 October at Red & Jerry’s in Englewood. A $5,000 series point fund will be awarded along with $750 in COMP Cams gift certificates plus Holley Carburetors and many other contingency prizes.. New members will be inducted into the CARC Hall of Fame. Stay tuned for details.

The Lucky Dog Award sponsored by 44th Auto Service (Jim Weese) is a randomly drawn award for weekly participants.  Thanks Jim!!

19 June at CNS with 13 coupes present. Carl Vair broke in hot-laps and due to car count CNS cancelled heat races . Frank Denning III returned to victory circle in the main event. After being penalized for jumping a restart ,Scott Rhoades worked his way back to 3rd place behind  Rich Bubak. Unfortunately Scott was Dqed after a confrontation with CNS officials. Jaime Bubak was the Lucky Dog. Frank Denning III took the series point lead.

July 4th weekend at CNS, 12 coupes were on-hand and once again CNS cancelled heat races due to car count. A hard hit into the turn 3 wall ended Cory Gordon’s night again. Cory’s luck has been terrible this year, a season he would  probably like to start over.  Cris Muhler gained his 2nd Mod Coupe main event of the season after a hard battle with Rich Bubak. Joe James Jr. was the Lucky Dog.

The #88 of Scott Bremkamp has been sold to Theron/Glenda Bredeson and will return as the #41 with Bill Kolb at the wheel (running a limited schedule).  Tom Adler has a new car #1 that will debut in July. Also, Vern Adler has purchased the #98 from the Denning’s and rumor has it that it will return with Ronnie Hults at the wheel.

Warren Rhoades past official of the CARC passed away on May 1, 2010. A special going away “final banquet” was held for him on May 6.  Grandson Scott has dedicated his season to “Gramps”.  A Warren Rhoades Memorial Race will be held at Big Country Speedway (a track Warren loved) in Cheyenne on August 14th. The High Plains Modifieds and Colorado Vintage Oval Races are also scheduled to appear. Come on out and honor Warren “one more time”
