Gary Land PDF Print E-mail

Gary Land has gotten away from being just known as "Bob's Kid" to a racer with his own name and style as he continually runs in-front of what ever he is racing from the cool coupes to the super modifieds.

Gary started racing quarter midgets at the age of 10 in 1978 and moved into Mod Coupes in 1984. He has since raced IMCA modifieds, ERA Supermods, and SRL Supermods. He is a three-time (2004 with Bill Willingham, 2005, and 2009) CARC Champion and counts this as his greatest achievement to date. He also very proud of his Lifetime Membership status. He has also served as Club President, a position he holds at this time.

His favorite racing memory is from winning his first main event on asphalt, at the Big Country Speedway oval in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was the final race of the 2003 season and coincidentally, the coronation of his Dad's fourth and final CARC Championship. Quite a night for the Land family! He also counts as favorite memories pitting for his Dad and helping Bob build Gary's first mod coupe. He is also grateful that he could always go to Bob for advice and guidance in racing and in leading the Club.

His worst racing memory involves having the steering wheel come off at speed - which has happened to him three times (once at Lakeside, once at CNS, and once in Salt Lake City with his Super). Somehow, he has avoided crashing under those conditions! But he does lay claim to a major "pucker factor". . . .

His Dad, Bob, was obviously his most major influence in his racing career. Racing was a family outing for the Land clan. His number (55) was chosen because one of Gary's heroes at Lakeside was Marv Slusser, Jr., who ran #56. Gary wanted a double number like his Dad (who drove the now retired #99), and 55 was open, and right next to Marv's. His season is dedicated to his family and his dedicated crew who have worked so hard in the offseason to prep the car.

Gary's crew consists of Crew Chief and co-owner Rod Guilford, co-owner Jim Pagliotti (Gary is the 3rd co-owner), Lou Byers, Mitch Magee and Max, wife Lee Ann, son Ryan Land, and Dennis Gordon. His sponsors are Total Power Stores, Keesen Enterprises, Serine Contact Lens Solutions, The Block Shop, Front Range Driveline, and Walters Automotive Specialties. Gary lives in Littleton with Lee Ann and 5-year-old Ryan. He is employed asa Master Plumber and Heat Technician. Maybe that 4th Championship will come in 2010!
